NAB Cup Round two - Top 30 Ranked by Position

04 / 03 / 2013

The second round of the NAB Cup was a return to nine traditional AFL matches, which meant we finally had an opportunity to see players at it for four solid quarters.

Unlike last week, three rookie defenders have made it into the top 30 ranking this week, with the most notable being Brett Goodes. Goodes showed signs in the first round of the NAB Cup with a solid display against both Collingwood and Essendon. He continued to impress this round with a Dream Team score of 70, which undoubtedly captured the attention of many avid fantasy coaches.

Daniel Currie put on another decent display this week and finished his game against Gold Coast with 20 hitouts and a Dream Team score of 58. His teammate Todd Goldstein on the other hand only managed a Dream Team score of 32, which is definitely not an encouraging sign for those looking for a midpriced ruck. Priced at $102K, Currie is definitely a good consideration for a bench ruckman, as it looks like he'll be getting a decent number of opportunities throughout the season.

Jimmy Bartel's last two years were definitely a drop off in Dream Team output, but he still managed to average ~96 in 2011 and 2012 and hasn't averaged below 90 since 2005. With the likelihood of him spending more time up forward, we might be seeing more big scores out of the champion. Last year he had nine scores above 100 and 6 below 90, which shows that while inconsistency is beginning to creep in, Bartel can still produce some big scores. He's priced at 492K, which may be a little too much for someone you're not expecting to improve, but if you're looking for reliability, Bartel's definitely a good pick.

Mitch Robinson has gone under the radar the last couple of seasons, even though he's managed to average 92 and 93 in 2011 and 2012 respectively. As a dual position player, Robinson is a very attractive pick, priced at a reasonable 478K. Under Mick Malthouse, we may be seeing Mitch Robinson taking his game to the next level and it wouldn't be much of a surprise if he starts averaging high 90s or even cracks the ton. He certainly has the potential to, with the only real concern being how much midfield time he gets with the likes of Judd, Murphy, Gibbs and Carrazzo also spending a lot of time in the centre square.
